Six brands account for nearly everything an Australian buyer will actually see, and they differ far more in what they cost to run and who stands behind them than in what they do. This page is the map; the reviews go deeper.
Brand and distributor details checked
| Brand | Made by | Australian presence | What it is | We earn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot | Whisker, United States | Cat Evolution | The category benchmark and the dearest. Rotating drum, proprietary drawer liners. | Nothing |
| PETKIT | PETKIT, China | PETKIT Australia | The most feature-dense. AI camera, app-first, proprietary refill rings. | Nothing |
| CATLINK | CATLINK, China | CATLINK Australia | Cheapest of the three automatics, and the only one with no consumable lock-in. | Nothing |
| PetSafe ScoopFree | Radio Systems, United States | PetSafe Australia | Rake mechanism with a disposable crystal tray. The cartridge model at its purest. | Nothing |
| Oz-Pet | Woodburn, New South Wales | Made here | Manual sifting tray built around wood pellet litter. The only Australian manufacturer we track. | Nothing |
| Catit | Rolf C. Hagen, Canada | Widely stocked | Manual hooded and jumbo trays. What most people own before they upgrade. | Nothing |
The column that matters most is the third one. Every brand above has an Australian entity behind it, which is not true of everything you will find on a marketplace listing. A grey import at a hundred dollars less has no local warranty, no parts, and a return shipping bill on a unit that weighs more than ten kilograms.
Three of the six tie you to a consumable only they sell. Litter-Robot uses its own waste drawer liners, PETKIT needs its own refill rings for the auto-packing to work, and PetSafe ScoopFree is built entirely around a disposable tray that is the litter and the waste container in one. CATLINK is the outlier: it states plainly that any liner that fits the drawer will do.
That single design choice moves the five-year cost more than the sticker price does, which is why the running-cost register exists and why we put it before the reviews rather than after them.
