Buying one in Australia

The Australian market for these is small, the units are heavy, and the price gap against overseas listings is tempting. This page is about what that gap actually buys you, and the few checks worth doing before you pay.

The Australian Litter-Robot 4 is not the same product as the American one. The camera mount and connection are not available in Australia or New Zealand. Every overseas review demonstrating the camera is describing hardware you cannot buy here, and that is worth knowing before a video convinces you.

240V, plugs and the difference between them

Units bought from the Australian distributors come with the right plug and a supply rated for our 230 to 240V mains. An imported unit may not. A travel adapter changes the shape of the pins and nothing else, so a 110V power supply plugged into an Australian socket through an adapter is a damaged power supply. Check the input rating printed on the brick, not the plug.

What a grey import really costs

Work it through rather than trusting the headline saving. A unit bought overseas at $200 less than local has no Australian warranty, so a motor failure in year two is entirely your problem. Sending an eleven-kilogram box back overseas costs more than the saving in one direction, let alone two. Add the risk that the model is a different revision, and the arithmetic stops being close.

Your rights when you buy locally

Buying from an Australian seller brings the consumer guarantees with it: the box must be of acceptable quality and last a reasonable time for what it cost. On a unit over a thousand dollars that is a good deal longer than the two-year manufacturer warranty, and it is a right no warranty term can shorten. That protection is most of what the local premium buys.

The pre-purchase checklist

  • Confirm the seller is the distributor or buys from them, and that the warranty is Australian.
  • Check the step-up height against your cat, especially if it is old, arthritic or small. The register is here.
  • Check your usual litter is not on the exclusion list. The register is here.
  • Price the consumables for a year before you compare sticker prices. The register is here.
  • Measure the floor space. These are between 60 and 81cm in every dimension, and they need clearance to open.
  • If it is your first automatic box, weigh the value of a money-back period. Only one brand offers one.

Common questions

Is it safe to buy an automatic litter box from overseas?

It is legal, but it is usually a false economy. You lose the Australian warranty and the local parts supply, and if anything goes wrong you are paying international freight on a unit that weighs over ten kilograms. The saving is typically one or two hundred dollars, which one return leg wipes out. There is also a product difference: the Litter-Robot 4 sold in Australia has no camera mount, so an imported one is not the unit most overseas reviews are describing.

Do automatic litter boxes work on Australian power?

The units sold by the Australian distributors ship with the correct plug and supply for 240V. An imported unit may come with a foreign plug and, more importantly, a power supply rated for a different voltage. A travel adapter changes the plug shape but not the voltage, and that distinction is where imported appliances get damaged.

Where is the best place to buy one in Australia?

From the brand's Australian distributor, or a retailer that buys from them. Cat Evolution imports Litter-Robot, PETKIT Australia handles PETKIT, and CATLINK Australia handles CATLINK. Prices between authorised sellers do vary on the same day, so it is worth checking two or three, but the important thing is that whoever you buy from can actually service the warranty.
