Noise and app dependency

Two things that decide whether you can live with one of these, and that almost nothing published in this category will tell you: how loud it is, and how much of it stops working when the wifi does.

An empty column is the finding here. Not one of the four brands publishes a power draw, and only one publishes a decibel figure. For an appliance that runs a motor in your home several times a day, that is a remarkable silence, and it is why we will not fill the gaps with numbers borrowed from a review of a different revision sold in another market.

What "app required" actually means

No box on this page needs a phone to scoop. The question is what you lose without one, and the honest answer differs sharply by brand.

  • PETKIT Purobot Ultra: the app is not optional for the features the product is sold on. The camera, the livestream and the AI health tracking sit behind a subscription, so a chunk of what you paid for stops if you stop paying.

This matters most in a rental with poor wifi, in a granny flat, or for anyone who simply does not want a camera pointed at a litter box streaming to a server overseas. If that is you, the CATLINK is the least demanding of the three and the Litter-Robot the next.

Reading a noise claim

"Whisper quiet" and "virtually silent" are not measurements. A published figure, like PETKIT's under 35dB, at least commits the manufacturer to something. Where a brand publishes nothing, assume a motor turning a heavy drum sounds like a motor turning a heavy drum, and place the box accordingly.

Common questions

How loud is an automatic litter box?

Almost nobody publishes a figure, which is the most useful thing this register has to say. Of the four brands we track, only PETKIT states a number: under 35dB for the Purobot Ultra, which is roughly a quiet library. Whisker describes the Litter-Robot 4 as "virtually silent" with no measurement behind it, and CATLINK and PetSafe publish nothing at all. Treat unmeasured silence claims as marketing.

Do automatic litter boxes need wifi to work?

The mechanism itself does not, on any model we track: they cycle on a timer or a sensor. What needs the connection is everything the app promises. On the PETKIT Purobot Ultra the AI camera and livestream features sit behind a PETKIT Care+ subscription, so part of what the purchase price bought is rented. The Litter-Robot 4 and CATLINK apps are genuinely optional.

Does it matter if the litter box is in a bedroom?

More than most spec-sheet features. A drum-style box runs a cycle several minutes after each visit, and cats visit overnight. If the box lives in a bedroom, a studio, or a small apartment, cycle noise and the delay before it starts are worth more attention than capacity or app features. Most models let you set a longer delay or a quiet window, which is the setting to look for.
